Working outside growing flowers, we're very aware of the special & very beautiful environment here in South West Scotland. It's a big attraction to us to live & work in Dumfries & Galloway - the wildlife, the clean air, the wild flowers, the Dark Skies... the list goes on.
Indeed, the area is so special, it's been designated Scotland's first Biosphere by UNESCO.
Known as the Galloway & Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere, this designation recognises the fantastic array of landscapes, wildlife, cultural heritage and learning opportunities in SW Scotland. It encourages communities, businesses and visitors to experience and celebrate this region in a sustainable way.
Galloway Flowers are proud to be awarded the Galloway & South Ayrshire Biosphere Certification Mark. This recognises leading producers (in our case of Seasonal flowers & Natural Petal Confetti) working responsibly & sustainably within the UNESCO Biosphere area. More information on the Biosphere & the projects it supports, can be found at the website.

And we take our environmental responsibilities seriously. We strive to develop a strong, profitable business producing beautiful seasonal flowers & natural petal Confetti for our Customers using responsible, sustainable methods.
On the horticultural side;
And for our floristry;
On the horticultural side;
- We keep purchase of new plastic materials (such as plant pots & buckets) to a minimum by carefully cleaning & reusing many times.
- Composting spent plant materials is a key activity & paying dividends in improving soil health & quality. Healthy plants growing in good soil resist attack from pests & disease better. Stems are stronger & longer, colours clearer - overall improving cut flower quality.
- We encourage a healthy balance of natural predators - frogs, toads, birds, ladybirds, hedgehogs & more to deal with insects & mollusc damage.
- We propagate most of our plants from seed & cuttings. Where it isn't possible, we prefer to source from British suppliers.
- We use a low peat planting mix from a Scottish supplier for propagation & potting on plants. We're trialling a new bracken/wool compost in 2020.
And for our floristry;
- We use plastic free techniques for almost all designs.
- We never use floral foam (non-biodegradeable & major source of microplastic pollution in marine environments) or cellophane.
- Our bouquets are delivered in water-filled glass containers, recycled pots or wrapped simply in paper. Customers are welcome to return the glass packaging used for deliveries so we can clean & reuse it. Many do!
- We use our own Galloway-grown flowers in our floristry, supplementing with flowers & foliage from other specialist growers in the British Isles (such as Narcissi from the Scilly Isles in winter). Our aim is to keep the distance from the field to your vase to a minimum. For most of our bouquets etc. you could count the 'Flower Miles' in steps!
