Some people count sheep to help them sleep, but this morning I'm wide awake & counting stems of the spring flowers coming along in the Flower Farm. Harder than it sounds! Some flowers are coming along so fast (like the little Muscari & Hyacinths), I've moved them into the cool & dark to slow them down. Others (such as the speciality tulips) are being cosseted indoors to speed them up. The reward for me is this little group of flowers pictured here for my kitchen table. All were fully opened so I might as well enjoy them. The focus of my counting is Mothers Day (Sunday March 26th), one of the big flowery days in the calendar. It's the weekend we aim to start having our flowers available for bouquets & posies, both for delivery & the Farmers Market in Kirkcudbright. Of course, we'll have plenty of spring flowers on the day, even though Mother Nature is so unpredictable to work with. I'll order extra Tulips & Narcissi from growers in Cornwall & the Scilly Isles for this special weekend. The flowers there are ready a few weeks before us. All our flowers & foliage are British grown throughout the year & almost all is grown here in New Galloway. To order a special bouquet for your Mother, take a look here Our first batch of Sweet Peas are growing away well now - these little seedlings are destined for a cossetted life in the Polytunnel so we have them ready for our early summer brides. The next batch (a mere 500 seeds) were started last Sunday & will be planted out in the Cut Flower Farm beds when ready. Yes, I do love my Sweet Peas! If you would love to grow Sweet Peas next Summer, why not join me for the next 'Cut Flowers From Your Garden' workshop? All the details can be found here through the LINK To help your cut flowers last longer, always put them in a scrupulously clean vase filled with fresh, clean water. Every couple of days change the water with fresh from the tap, if you can, as this helps too. These simple steps prevent the buildup of harmful bacteria in the water that reduce the time flowers look lovely for (& can even make the water smelly!) And for Flower Farmers like us, that means we spend a lot of time washing buckets! It's not a glamourous task - but one of the important details that ensures our flowers last as long as possible. As soon as each stem is cut, we immediately place it in a bucket of fresh, clean water. We take the bucket the 20 yards or so to the cool Flower Shed. Here it spends several hours taking a long drink. Only when fully hydrated are stems prepared into bouquets or the buckets ready to be delivered to our Wholesale Florist Customers. It's a perfect sunny day to wash & dry a good number of buckets today. They'll be ready for the flowers we'll begin cutting for sale later this month. It'll save time, & I like knowing there's a good supply stacked up ready for the busy season to come. |
